Richard W. Clayton, 78, died on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center.

Sharing of Memories will be held 11:00 am, Friday, August 26, 2022, at Cox-Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa.  Casual attire, please, and blue jeans are preferred. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Heart Association or the Richard Deming Cancer Center.  Donations may be sent in care of Cox-Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, PO Box 163, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. He was born on April 11, 1944, in Grinnell, the son of Roger and MaDora (Ross) Clayton. Richard found happiness with Clara Kay Harper and married her on May 18, 1991, in Cedar Rapids. He worked for the City of Grinnell in the Street Department.

Richard was always on the go, there were things that needed to be done. Gardening, mowing, and cutting firewood to name a few. Richard and Kay liked to go camping and visiting with family and friends. His love for his family was undeniable, especially his love for Kay.

Richard's legacy will live on through his wife, Kay of Grinnell; his children, Kevin (Teresa) Wake of Cedar Rapids, Richard Clayton of Enid, Oklahoma, Rhonda Clayton Yocham of Arizona, Daniel Clayton of Newton, and Robert Clayton of Grinnell; 16 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; four siblings, Ron (Judie) Clayton of Grinnell, Louise (Steve) Worsham of Dover, Ohio, David (Julie) Clayton of California and Virginia (Eric) Roudabush of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed by all, including Cooper, his dog.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Susan and Donna.
