Robert G. Thompson, 94, of Grinnell, died Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A family graveside service will be held Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.  Visitation will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021, from 12 noon until 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Cox-Smith Funeral Home, located at 1 ^st Avenue and Prairie Street.  It is recommended that everyone attending wear a mask and social distancing should be practiced as well.  Memorials for the Grinnell Volunteer Fire Department or to Grinnell Regional Hospice may be sent in care of Cox-Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, PO Box 163, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Robert was born December 10, 1926, in Poweshiek County, Iowa to Cyrus and Ollie (Stuart) Thompson.  He attended Sheridan Township school.  On February 26, 1948 he married Mary Lou Conger in Grinnell.

In the 1950's Robert was a police officer with the Grinnell Police Department.  He later worked for the City of Grinnell in the Street Department, then spent 23 years driving truck for Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, before retiring in 1988.  Robert was a volunteer fireman for the Grinnell Fire Department for 28 years.

Robert loved vacationing and traveling, he went to Minnesota nearly every year to fish and had traveled to Europe, Hawaii and enjoyed his trips to Las Vegas and going to Colorado to visit with his sisters.  He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and camping.  He was always there to help with "To Do" list that his family or friends had.  He liked cribbage and once was dealt the perfect hand.  Robert was a member of the Eagles.

He will be remembered by his sons, Donnie (Char) Thompson of Lake Ponderosa, Jim (Carolyn) Thompson of Marshalltown, Chuck (Rene) Thompson of Tama, David (Jim Powers) Thompson of Grinnell and Dennis (Loretta) Thompson of Grinnell; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, several great grandchildren, his sister, Verna Golff of North Dakota and brother, Virgil Thompson of Marshalltown.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou in 2006, his parents, ten siblings and one grandchild.
